Steering Wheel - Part 1 - Metal Frame
Plan 2 - Episode 5
In Episode 5 of the Flatbed Felix Pedal Car Build, Vaughan dives into the metalwork for the steering wheel! He begins by crafting the center steering boss, then uses flat bar to bend it into a perfect circular frame. From there, he shapes and forms the spokes, building a strong support structure for the wooden steering wheel. This episode focuses on essential metal shaping techniques, exploring various methods for bending a precise circle from flat bar and constructing a durable, functional steering wheel frame from the ground up. Watch as Flatbed Felix continues to take shape—one turn at a time!
Skills You'll Learn
This episode introduces more advanced metalworking techniques. You’ll gain hands-on experience in measuring and marking, using a bandsaw, drilling and tapping, deburring, bending flat bar using a bar bender and other methods, and MIG welding the components together.
Tools You'll Need
To follow along, you'll need a tape measure, square, scriber or marker, clamps, angle grinder, drills and taps, metal files or deburring tools, a power drill or drill press, MIG welder, workbench, vice, hammers, bar bender, and other general hand tools. Access to a lathe is optional but helpful. Don’t forget to wear proper personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety goggles, and hearing protection.
