Steering Wheel - Part 2 - Octagon
Plan 2 - Episode 6
In Episode 6 of the Flatbed Felix Pedal Car Build, Ezio focuses on crafting the wooden parts of the steering wheel. He explains several methods, such as using a 3D printer or adapting an existing steering wheel. In this episode, Ezio demonstrates how to create the two halves of the wheel by either using a single piece of timber or a long length of timber to form an octagonal shape for added wood grain strength. This episode specifically covers the octagonal method. If you'd prefer the single-wood-piece method, skip to Episode 8.
Skills You'll Learn
You'll learn how to measure and mark timber accurately using templates. Ezio demonstrates effective cutting techniques with a hand saw, saw bench, and drop saw, including how to set up length stops for consistency. He also introduces a traditional "bench hook" to protect your workbench and safely cut timber at angles.
Once the pieces are cut, Ezio shows how to glue the octagonal segments together using a tie strap. After the glue has set, he explains how to remove excess glue with files and chisels, then shows how to bring the pieces down to the correct thickness using a thicknesser, preparing them for the next stage.
Tools You'll Need
To follow along, you'll need a tape measure, square, pencil or marker, clamps, chisel, hand saw, metal files or sanding paper, mallet, workbench, wood vice, wood glue, greaseproof paper, and a tie strap. A thicknesser and orbital sander are optional but helpful. Be sure to wear gloves, safety goggles, and hearing protection for safety.
