Steering Wheel - Part 4 - 1-Pce & Assembly
Plan 2 - Episode 8
In Episode 8 of the Flatbed Felix Pedal Car Build, Ezio demonstrates the single-piece wooden board steering wheel method. Following the template guide, you'll learn how to use the correct router bits and center holes to create perfectly shaped top and bottom pieces for the wheel. Once the single pieces are at the same stage as the octagonal method, Ezio shows how to sand the top and bottom flat on a disc sander. Then, he demonstrates how to chisel an opening for the metal frame. Finally, Ezio drills the necessary holes to secure the frame with wood screws. Final finishing, gluing, and sanding will be covered in Episode 32, when painting begins.
Skills You'll Learn
In this episode, you'll learn how to set up the router jig for the single-piece wooden method. Ezio takes you step-by-step through the safe setup and use of the router, explaining how to adapt the router guide to follow the template for a smooth, precise shape. This technique ensures the correct thickness and a perfect fit for the metal frame.
Ezio then demonstrates how to use a chisel and linisher to create a slot for the metal arms to fit into. Using a power drill, he drills the necessary holes for assembly. Finally, he shows how to mount the steering wheel using blocks of timber, and how to fit the wooden top and bottom securely to the metal frame with wood screws.
