Steering Column Bracket & Assembly
Plan 2 - Episode 9
In this episode of the Flatbed Felix Pedal Car Build, Vaughan completes the steering setup. He begins by fabricating a custom steering column bracket and welding it securely to the chassis. Next, he installs the steering column rod and attaches the wooden steering wheel, making slight modifications to ensure a perfect fit. Vaughan then assembles the steering arms and braces, before welding the steering lock bracket centrally to the steering arm, enabling smooth, full-range steering motion.
Skills You'll Learn
In this episode, you’ll learn how to bend sheet metal to form the steering column bracket using a T-dolly in a vice. Vaughan covers key techniques like measuring, marking, and welding, which are essential to finishing the bracket properly.
You’ll also learn how to make the final adjustments to mount the steering wheel, ensuring proper wheel alignment and a secure attachment to the steering rod. Additional skills include cutting to length and cleaning threads for a perfect fit, ensuring a solid and smooth mounting process.
Tools You'll Need
To follow along, you’ll need a tape measure, square, scriber or marker, hole punch, hammer, linisher, power drill and drill set, T-dolly, vice, press brake bender, welder, angle gauge, and a workbench. Be sure to wear gloves, safety goggles, and hearing protection for safety.
